Who we are.
Mount Kenya Center for Capacity Building is an innovative Social Enterprise venture incorporated in Kenya under the Business Names Act. The Center works with the rural communities in Africa to make them positive catalysts of socio-cultural and economic change integrating the facets of environmental sustainability. Its overarching goal is to empower the rural communities in Africa with a view to enhancing their resilience to the associated livelihood shocks by drawing upon business techniques and private sector approaches to realize sustainable solutions. The Center believes that rural development can only be realized through development of socially beneficial enterprises but not on exclusive reliance on grants and charities.
How we do it.
Mount Kenya Center for Capacity Building facilitates the rural communities to create profitable enterprises and access the markets. This function is realized through aggregating and training the rural communities in enterprise development, facilitating market linkages, linkage to sources of affordable capital, exposing them to and facilitating acquisition of affordable production efficient technologies including inputs, equipments and machineries. The Center facilitates prudent management of natural resources by the local communities including governance, sustainable management, extraction and marketing. The Center bears the responsibility of moderating the processes, bridging the gap in information, knowledge and skills, identifying viable profitable enterprises and handling marketing and associated logistics.
Why social Entrepreneurship
The social enterprise approach provides the platform for bottom-up participatory rural development. The approach is founded on democratic development principles where the local communities own the enterprises as opposed to the usually top-down knowledge inclusive processes by the majority of the organizations in the “development world”. If a product or service is solving a challenge and the communities are willing to pay for what improves their livelihoods, then the people themselves are in charge of their own development. The Center blends entrepreneurship with development efforts where communities get skills, incomes and a stable environment. The Center emphasizes knowledge that is socially and economically transformative to the livelihoods of the rural communities in Africa.
The mission of the Center is creating and promoting profitable social enterprises.
